Orange Wines
Orange wines can be thought of as "wholemeal white wines". For white wines, the white grapes are pressed after harvest and the grape juice is separated from the mash *. The juice (grape must) then is fermented without the mash into a white wine.
For orange wines, white grapes are also pressed after harvesting, but the mash remains with the grape must. As a result, the must extracts from the grape skin extra color, flavors and tannins . This turns white grapes into an wine with an orange color hence an Orange Wine.
You can call Orange wines also macerated white wines, as the wines macerate on the grape skin.
* Mash: The solid ingredients after crushing grapes. i.e. Grape skin, pulp and seeds.
